    This weekend: Free Movies, Ice Hockey, Sunday Market & more

    After the short working week, it's time to relax again! This weekend it's all about entertainment at Docklands with free movies, sport, shopping & something for the kids.

    Docklands Classic Film Festival:
    Free Event, 7pm nightly
    Every night of the week features a different movie theme for you to enjoy. Director’s chairs are available plus popcorn, hot chocolate and other tasty treats are on offer from surrounding restaurants... Bellissimo and Mecca Bah make a delicious take away PIZZA and other hot food to keep you toasty warm.

    This weekend: AFL, school holiday activities & Docklands restaurants now on Twitter

    This weekend marks the last one of the school holidays, so what better way to spend it than to bring the kids to Docklands for some great activities. These include:

    Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal, Etihad Stadium
    Dockland's Etihad Stadium will once again play host to this year's Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal. It is the eighth consecutive year that the stadium has held the annual event, and this year it hopes to raise even more much needed funds for the hospital. Free activities and games will be held for the kids throughout the day, with a special appearances by Dora the Explorer from 10am - 4pm.

    This weekend @ Docklands: Wooden Boat Festival, Chinese New Year, Market & $15 Pizza Pasta Day

    It's another jam-packed weekend at Docklands. Kicking off tonight will be St Kilda versus Collingwood in the pre-season NAB Cup. They play at Etihad Stadium tonight, doors open from 6pm. Check out what's also happening this weekend below:

    Melbourne Wooden Boat Festival (19th-21st Feb)
    The Melbourne Wooden Boat Festival at Victoria Harbour, brings together the wooden boat and classic yacht groups in and around the city. The event is designed to promote wooden boat heritage and connect a broader public with the spirit of timber boating. The program includes both on water and piazza displays (on land). The event is expected to attract between 2,000 and 6,000 visitors over the two days and one evening. Click here for more info.

    Chinese New Year celebrations (20th Feb)
    Celebrate Chinese New Year with a free cultural event at Waterfront City this Saturday 20th February. There will be a whole range of activities such as Lion Dances, Kung Fu demonstrations, traditional Chinese handicrafts, clowns, art competitions and much, much more.

    Mr Sandman Sand Sculpture - All Day:
    Award winning international artists have sculpted 20 tonnes of golden sand into an extraordinary and eye-catching sand installation in the heart of Docklands. Presented by the City of Melbourne as part of the Summer Fun in the City program.

    Know Your Product - Emerging Young Artists:
    Curated by Hanna Silver - 10.30am - 8.30pm
    Australia’s up and coming talent takes to the waterfront at Docklands with
    a range of music to suit all tastes, curated for 2010 by Hanna Silver.

    The day starts with Docklands regulars Ticklish Allsorts performing for the discerning five year old (10.30 and 1pm). From 3pm, Hanna's program kicks off with The Twoks, one of those bands you have to see before they get famous and start charging too much... At 5pm Hanna's own rocky groove combo R! will hit the stage, and at 7pm, the gracious modern pop of Francolin will feature. Throughout the day, roaming performers The Mechanical Variety Hour and DJ Moose will add to the artistry.

    Starting with the best songs for the discerning five year old, with the popular Ticklish Allsorts (12pm and 2pm), followed by psycho gypsies Rapskallion at 3pm. At 6pm, The Robbie Williams Experience /Louie and The Party Boys take to the stage with a great repertoire and some amazing antics, their show must be seen to be believed.

    2010 Australia Day Eve Comedy Debate:
    At 8.30pm, the Australia Day Eve Comedy Debate Captains Dave O’Neill and Cal Wilson will take to the stage armed with comedy, gags and a bit of old fashioned irreverence for the 2010 Comedy Debate, ably supported by Corinne Grant, Hung Le, Hannah Gadsby and Tom Gleeson, and warm-up from Mrs. Ida Noe, an eccentric grandmother with an accordion.

    For the cherry on top, Hanna has selected pop sensations Ponzu Island to play the comedy after-show set.

    This weekend: Designers' House fashion show, Christmas lights, market & $15 pizzas

    This weekend, get a jump on this summer’s hottest looks with a FREE fashion show from the stylish folks at Designers’ House. They are hosting two fashion parades on Sunday 13th December at Harbour Town Shopping Centre. Come on down at 1pm to catch all the bikini action.     Docklands Twilight Market, Thurs 17th Dec

    The Docklands Sunday Market will hold their 'Christmas Twilight Market' on Thursday 17th December 4.30pm to 8.30pm. Enjoy the special treats on offer from stallholders in the warm summer air.     This weekend: $15 pizzas, market, Thomas the Tank & Santa come to Harbour Town

    There is lots happening at Docklands this weekend. Kicking off the Christmas festivities, Santa's Breakfast at Harbour Town on Sunday will be a real treat for the kids.

    100 kids will be entertained with a fun Christmas show and breakfast. Spaces are limited, so ring the Tourism Lounge on 03 9328 8600 to register your child.

    Meanwhile on Saturday, the Thomas & Friends Surprise Show will begin with three shows per day (excluding Mondays) and run until 20th Dec. The free sing-a-long show is an interactive experience and includes a dynamic a mix of performers, music and theatrical magic.

    Get your dancing shoes on at Docklands: Movie Moves & Sunday Salsa

    There is no better time to throw on those dancing shoes and get active than over the summer months. At Docklands there are a few ways to get that booty shaking, whether it's for fitness or fun, or both!

    Santa Claus arrives at Habour Town

    Guess who is on his way to Harbour Town? That's right it's the jolly old man in the big, red suit! Santa Claus arrives at Docklands shopping hub tomorrow from 1st until 25th of December.

    He will be have candy canes, balloons and Christmas carols to share with his friends. Santa will also be joined by his troupe of jazz band, elves and fairies from 19th - 24th December. They will perform between 11am and 3pm daily.

    Santa's visiting times:

    Monday-Thursdays: 10am to 4pm
    Fridays: 10am to 8pm
    Saturday-Sunday: 10am to 4pm

    Santa will also be hosting a special free breakfast at Harbour Town for the kids on Sunday, 6th December. 100 kids will be treated to a fun and entertaining Christmas show and breakfast. Spots are limited so book now by phoning the Tourism Lounge on (03) 9328 8600.

    Urban Reforestation's December workshop program

    After their official launch party a few weeks ago, the guys at Urban Reforestation are raring to go with their December workshop program. There is something for everyone next month, from learning how to make your own sustainable Christmas gifts to garden fairy adventures for the kids.

    An introduction to the science and art of traditional culturing and making your own sauerkraut, kimchis, sourdoughs and sprouts. Learn how to create delicious homemade foods.

    Santa's Breakfast at Harbour Town: Sunday, 6th December

    Harbour Town Shopping Centre will host Santa's Breakfast on Sunday 6th December at 10am. 100 kids will be treated to a fun and entertaining Christmas show and breakfast.

    Award winning international artists have sculpted 20 tonnes of golden sand into an extraordinary and eye-catching sand installation in the heart of Docklands.     Christmas events at Docklands: Santa comes to Harbour Town; Carols at Victoria Harbour

    In addition to all the Christmas Day lunches and dinners happening on and off land at Docklands, you will also find a variety of great festive activities throughout December.

    Christmas events/activities:
    • From 1st - 25th December Santa Claus will be visiting Harbour Town Shopping Centre and Waterfront City promenade. He will be have candy canes, balloons and Christmas Carols to share with his friends. Santa will also be joined by his troupe of jazz band, elves and fairies from 19th - 24th December - so keep your eye out for that!
    • Also ready to entertain the kids from 5th - 20th December will be the Thomas & Friends' Christmas Surprise. The all-singing, all-dancing live show will be held daily at Waterfront City piazza at 11am, 1pm and 3pm*
    • Lighting up Docklands with a mesmerising show of Christmas lights will be the 'Follow the lights to the Harbour' display. As part of the City of Melbourne Christmas campaign, the display can be seen on boats and yachts as they light up Victoria Harbour. A definite sight to behold, you can catch the display 13th - 20th December.
    • Finally, you better start warming up those vocal cords because the Docklands Carols at Victoria Harbour will be taking place again on 10th December. Led by the Docklands Church and the Gospel Sunday band, it is a great way to get the family in the festive mood. Melbourne City Sports will also be hosting a Christmas-themed outdoor movie and Safeway will be cooking up a pre-Christmas sausage sizzle.

    2009 Corporate Dragon Boat Challenge

    As the year draws to a close, a great way to get your work colleagues together for a fun and active event is by registering them for the 2009 Corporate Dragon Boat Challenge. It is the ultimate team building activity and anyone can do it.

    The Challenge consists of two races for each team, conducted over a 200m course on Victoria Harbour Docklands, with a final race for the fastest four teams.

    Teams must be made up of a minimum of 8 women and 12 men paddlers along with a drummer, who sits at the bow to set the stroke rate and keep the team in time. Also, team members must have a bonafide connection with the company
    (i.e. employee, family, business associate, etc.)

    On event day, Dragon Boats Victoria will provide the dragon boats, paddles, life jackets, an accredited helm/sweep to steer for each team and a comprehensive safety briefing prior to racing. Prior to the event, DBV will also offer 2 free 1 hour coaching sessions.

    Team entry is $1000, up to 26 participants per team (includes 5 emergencies). Closing date for entries is Thursday 19th November 2009.

    Event: Upstream 50km Challenge, Sunday 7th November

    This weekend sees the Upstream Foundation's major annual event, the Upstream 50km Challenge.

    So, what's involved in the Upstream 50km Challenge? 50km walk or run from Docklands to Donvale along the picturesque Yarra River Enter as an individual, 50km team (2-6 people) or relay team (2-10 people). Each relay participant must walk a minimum of 30km.

    In its four-year history, the Upstream Foundation has raised over $500,000 for charities including Camp Quality, Leprosy Mission, and the Leukemia Foundation.

    Registrations closed on 30th October, however please contact Upstream on (03) 8831 3529 for more information. All donations over $2 are tax deductible 100% of donations go directly to the beneficiaries.

    When: Sunday, 7th November 2009 - Participants will start at Docklands between the times of 7am - 8.30am. The awards ceremony will begin at Donvale Christian College around 7pm.

    Coming soon to Docklands: Icehouse

    Something very exciting is coming soon to Docklands...

    Icehouse - Australia's first ice sports and entertainment venue, including two Olympic ice rinks, will open at Waterfront City in early 2010. The centre will also feature winter sports gym, stadium seating, cafe and bar, plus much, much more.

    Open to the public, it will be available to skaters of all ages and experience levels from professional to beginner. Ice-skating will be on offer every day of the week, allowing you to take lessons from qualified instructors or join one of the many skate schools or sporting clubs, including curling or ice hockey.
